For the writing portion of this class, and for a majority of your coursework, you will be expected to shape and organize this thinking into a successful academic essay. You will study the conventional form of the academic essay and learn to incorporate the following features of successful writing into your own work:

  • Focus and thesis statements
  • Topic sentences and supporting paragraphs
  • Development: examples, explanations, and properly cited research
  • Principals and methods of organization
  • Grammatically correct sentences, stylistically engaging language, and properly formatted work.

You will also learn and practice generalized strategies that will help you succeed with your writing:

  • How to assess a writing situation: your purpose and your audience
  • How to use different modes of discourse to effectively deliver your message
  • How to take advantage of various steps in the writing process
